DRAFT ARTICLE
In the interests of transparency, New Quaker Ministries drafts all of it’s articles in the open. We are a non-profit, independent ministry, funded entirely through small individual donations and contributions. While an article is in DRAFT, it is unfinished and is likely to change rapidly.

A note on the state of discernment for the items currently in the game library: There is a bit of a chicken and egg problem when starting a new library or club.

You can design what you hope to be a sustainable democratic process, and thus want to hold yourself to that same standard of process, but without the actual infrastructure or community to act on it, you can’t really hold yourself accountable to the very same process you are designing. This is far from fair, and is not the intent we should act upon, but it does need to be a temporary state while things are being setup.

The current game library has not gone through the proposed process of discernment, nor do we intend to do this for any game added for review to the game library for the first few months of meetings. Once a sustainable meeting cadence is established we will go back through the catalog of initial games and take each of them through the process of discernment described herein.

That said, during this interim period we will reject games obviously not aligned with the testimonies or intent of the group. For example games that glorify topics such as colonialism, domination, warfare, drugs, sex work, or murder are not and will never be allowed. Keep in mind that it isn’t specific topics that are banned. It’s the intent behind them that matters. For example detective games that solve a murder might be allowed, but games where a player is encouraged or expected to commit a murder will not be allowed. Both games involve murder but one teaches the virtue of problem solving and helping your community, and the other fantasizes violence. There is a clear difference.
